When women come together: building support and resilience in southern Kyrgyzstan
Подробнее
In 2024, small but meaningful changes began to take shape across Osh city and the Aravan and Kara-Suu districts.
These changes started with a simple idea — women coming together.
Safe spaces for connection
Women’s groups were formed across communities, creating spaces where participants could meet, share experiences and support one another.
Over time, these groups evolved into safe environments where women could speak openly, seek support and find collective solutions.
Such spaces play a key role in building trust — the foundation of social cohesion and peace.
From ideas to action
Through trainings and mentoring, women developed new skills and confidence.
This led to the creation of several initiatives:
— a women’s information and resource centre
— a mobile social hairdressing service “Helping Hand”
— a support centre for women and families
These initiatives addressed real community needs while demonstrating the power of local action.
Economic empowerment
Women participated in trainings on entrepreneurship, financial literacy and business development.
Many began launching small businesses or generating new income streams, strengthening their economic independence and role within their families and communities.
Support that makes a difference
The groups also became access points for professional support.
Women received consultations from:
— lawyers
— psychologists
— business advisors
This support helped them navigate challenges and build more stable futures.
Strengthening communities
Over time, these initiatives contributed to stronger and more inclusive communities in Osh, Aravan and Kara-Suu.
Within the “El Demi” project, 7 I’Tirek women’s groups were established, along with small grant initiatives aimed at economic empowerment and reintegration support.
Stronger together
Today, women’s groups are more than support networks — they are active agents of change.
By creating opportunities, strengthening voices and fostering solidarity, they contribute to more peaceful, resilient and inclusive communities.
When women come together, they do not only change their own lives — they help transform society as a whole.
